Local Internships
Summer Opportunities

“I felt as if I had been ‘thrown into the fire’,” but after being acquainted with the environment and other police officers, “I was ready to do almost anything by myself.” ... “I plan on using this internship experience as a stepping-stone into future law enforcement employment.” - Erin Poettker, Six Flags

“I have seen dead bodies, smelled them, and cut up their organs.  I’ve taken pictures of them in their positions at death; I’ve slept near them, and I’ve transported them to the morgue for their last doctor’s appointment."  Samantha spent her summer working with the Deputy Coroners: working autopsies, examining organs, attending inquests, surveying crimes and taking photographs. - Samantha Jordan, Will County Coroner's Office, Il

"In terms of my intern experiences this summer aiding in life decisions that I'll be making as I prepare to leave college, nothing else I've ever done compares." - Patrick Pisani, St. Charles County Public Defenders Office

"The best part about the job was when I would interact with the inmates. They would open up and actually talk to me as if I could relate to them...I eventually would like to get into management, but I would like to start as a correctional officer, because I feel that that’s the best way to establish a rapport with the inmates."- Jason Rung, Iowa State Penitentiary

" I saw young children, first time offenders, career criminals, drug pushers, murderers, and sex offenders. Sometimes all a person has to turn to is his or her probation officer.  I would have never expected to feel the compassion and empathy I felt for many of the clients... It has been one of the best experiences of my life and has really shown me who I am and how I can make a difference in the world." - Courtney See, Kirksville Probation & Parole

The experience you gain from internships gives you an important edge in the competition for future professional employment and admission to graduate and professional schools. They are increasingly popular with employers, too. Firms that hire new college graduates now rank internships their most effective source of new recruits. Last year, fully 25 percent of new full-time workers in the United States were recruited from internship programs.  Most professional internships start the application process in January for a summer internship.  Internships are readily easy to set up.  For the summer the best method is to explore opportunities near your hometown with local police departments and county attorney offices.  For a more professional experience seek out national government agencies, some are located in St. Louis and Kansas City.  A good listing of internships is sited below.
