Internships  2008 Summer Opportunities

"An internship is for the most enthusiastic, motivated, and deserving students. There are many advantages, such as, favorable contact with prospective employers; experiences, insight, and knowledge drawn back from the classroom; self-discovery; and, first-hand experience which cannot be taught in the classroom.  Interns are given the opportunity to “test the waters” before making lifelong commitments.  Lastly, the internship is an excellent capstone experience for the Justice Systems major."—Dr. Matt Eichor, Emeritus

Below are a few comments from 2005 interns' weekly and summary reports…….

Taryn Spoon interned with the Cass County Sheriff's Office, Virginia, IL

Taryn Spoon spent eight weeks at the Cass County Sheriff’s Department experiencing various aspects of the criminal justice field including county and city patrol, and courts and corrections.  She states, “ I learned the process of conducting a traffic stop, a search, an arrest, issuing a citation, serving the papers of the court, the process of booking an inmate….all of these have contributed to my understanding of the way the law enforcement field of criminal justice works.” Not only did she gain a better understanding of the criminal justice field, but this internship allowed her to see that if she decides not to practice law in the future, then she can become a police officer.

Kenny Jacobs interned with The Bowers Law Office,
Kansas City, Mo

Kenny Jacobs conducted his internship with The Bowers Law Office in Kansas City, Mo.  Most of his time spent there was focused on personal injury cases.  He was able to do research on the cases, observe the court hearings for the cases, meet clients involved, sit in on a settlement for the case, and even give his “expert ” opinions to one of the lawyers regarding the case. This experience gave him a chance to see how the whole legal system works, he said, “The time in court is very short compared to the amount of correspondence and paperwork done up to that point.” Kenny was very appreciative for having this opportunity, and he stated, “If the second half goes as good as the first half I will have learned so much more than I expected coming into this.”

Erin Poettker spent her summer at Six Flags,
St. Louis, Mo

Erin Poettker spent her summer with the Six Flags Security Department in St. Louis, Mo. She dealt with a lot of the same situations that police officers would handle, such as lost children, injuries, suspicious people, vehicles, thefts and fires just to name a few. During her first day she said, “I felt as if I had been ‘thrown into the fire’,” but after she got acquainted with her environment and the other police officers, she said, “I was ready to do almost anything by myself.”  Erin described her internship as “a fast paced learning experience”. This internship helped her gain a wealth of knowledge, and she states, “I plan on using this internship experience as a stepping-stone into future law enforcement employment.”
